Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Gerard Maley, says the Gunner

Government’s economic blunders are on full display, yet again, after it was revealed the cost of the Myilly Point playground development has ballooned to $4 million and the demolition of the Chan Building has blown out by $1 million.

“Both these projects have blown out by half their original budget. These are prime examples of Labor’s ongoing and negligent fiscal mismanagement.

“This morning on ABC radio Darwin Member for Port Darwin, Paul Kirby, admitted the Myilly Point development – which is in his electorate and originally budgeted for $2.7 million – will cost more than $4 million when it is complete.

“This admission comes as Opposition questioning revealed the cost to demolish the Chan Building has blown out by $1 million – and the deadline delayed almost 12 months.

“How can Territorians trust the Gunner Government to manage any major project on time or on budget, when Labor oversees consistent and significant cost blow outs to projects on sluggish timeframes,” said Mr Maley.

A snapshot of Labor’s cost blow outs and government waste include:

  • $14 million budget blow out during the construction of Garramilla Boulevard
  • $12 million Turf Club Grandstand in the Chief Minister’s Fannie Bay electorate
  • $7 million overspend on the underground car park at State Square
  • $2.7 million Cavenagh Street shade structure
  • $80,000 on a review of the Cavenagh Street shade structure
  • $581,000 for an Ernst & Young consultancy into Health’s COVID response
  • $220,000 on a renewables targets report – made public after an FOI request, with every single page redacted, and:
  • $5,000 spent by the Health department to rent a Christmas tree
