Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Gerard Maley, says Territorians have lost confidence in the
ICAC Commissioner, and Commission, following a range of errors in process and judgement.
As a result, the CLP Opposition will this afternoon move a motion to establish a detailed
parliamentary review into the ICAC Act.

“The Opposition is demanding a full-scale parliamentary probe into the Act, not a closed door
in-house audit by the Gunner Government.

“The ICAC is an important institution and must operate independent of Government – and to
the highest standard.

“Only a parliamentary review that receives public submissions and holds public hearings will
suffice.

“The Chief Minister’s backdoor report only further erodes public confidence.

“It’s very clear there needs to be greater scrutiny with respect to the operation of the Act
regarding journalistic privilege, the conduct of the Commissioner, the role of the ICAC
Inspector, and the appointment of the Deputy Commissioners, not to mention the protections
afforded to those who might seek to blow the whistle on the ICAC itself, following the
shocking Estimates whistle-blower comments.

“The CLP Opposition welcomes – and will participate in – a full and thorough investigation
and review of the operation of the ICAC Act.

“The Chief Minister should not be conducting a review in secret, and needs to be reminded
the anti-corruption watchdog is not a government tool,” said Mr Maley.
