A 28% surge in assaults, 36% jump in domestic violence assaults and 37% spike in alcohol related
assaults across the Territory are the shocking outcomes revealed in the latest police crime statistics.

Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro says in the 12-months to June there were an astonishing 8605
assaults, 5483 domestic assaults and 4456 alcohol related assaults in the Territory.

There were also 379 sexual assaults, 2106 house break-ins, 1734 commercial break-ins, 1301
vehicles stolen and 7794 instances of property damage in the 12-months ending June.

“Crime, particularly violent crime, is out of control and it’s deeply troubling the Gunner Government
has no plan and no conviction to deal with this,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.

“Month after month the crime figures are released and month after month there is no response to
those figures from the Gunner Labor Government.

“To the Chief Minister, the crime figures are another set of numbers to avoid or ignore. The
consequences of Labor’s lax policies are being carried by the victims and police and not the
perpetrators.

“Violent crime has been increasing this year, but there is no urgency in the Gunner Government’s
response.”

Palmerston recorded the largest increases, with assaults increasing from 565 to 875 (55% increase),
domestic violence up from 306 to 533 (74%) and alcohol related assaults surged from 272 to 476
(75%).

“What plan does the Government have for dealing with these terrible increases?” says Mrs
Finocchiaro.

“Territorians want action and an acknowledgement from the Government they are being heard and
that something will be done.

“Instead Territorians have a Government that tries to minimise the political damage rather than the
damage to individuals and police caused by their soft approach to crime.

“The Gunner Government has always been offender focussed and their latest youth bail reform is
proving worthless to victims.

“The lack of response to startling figures like these shows how numb the Gunner Government is to
the pain of Territorians.”
