Today we mourn the loss of a true champion for the Northern Territory, with the passing of
Eric Houguet Poole.

Mr Poole, a long-term Member for Araluen, passed away in Nusa Dua, Bali on Wednesday 18
August 2021, following a short but brave battle with illness. He was 79.

We extend our sincerest condolences to Eric’s wife Elizabeth, children Justin, Cameron and
Tory, as well as his nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed
by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Prior to his career in politics, Eric was Chairman of the NT Tourist Commission – a position he
held from 1979 until 1986.

Eric understood the enormous benefits tourism could bring to the Territory at a time when
we had little infrastructure and poor air services. Under his leadership, the Northern Territory
was put onto the world stage through campaigns such as “It’s just a part of the story” ensuring
the NT was a ‘must explore’ destination in the 1980’s.

Elected the Member for Araluen at a by-election in 1986, Eric comfortably held the seat until
his retirement at the 2001 General Election. He was well known for his compassion, optimism
and never taking a backward step in advocating for the people of Alice Springs. A true leader
for Central Australia.

Mr Poole held major roles in the formulation of policies, and in negotiations, leading to the
development of the Northern Territory in his many portfolios including: Minister for Tourism,
Minister for Correctional Services, Minister for Asian Relations, Trade and Industry, and
Minister for Regional Development.

Following his retirement, Eric continued to contribute to the Northern Territory through his
appointment to the NT Parole Board, and spent much time visiting and living in Darwin in
support of his family.

Thank you for championing the Territory, and thank you for your dedication to the people
who call this great place home. Rest in Peace.
