Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Gerard Maley, says Territorians have had a gutful with the
Gunner Labor Government’s head in the sand approach to the escalating crime crisis.

“Territory-wide, violent crime has again risen drastically. In the 12 months to July this year,
close to nine thousand Territorians were the victim of assault. Domestic violence-related
assault is up 35 percent and alcohol-related attacks have risen to just under 4,450 incidents.

“Domestic violence-related assaults have increased by 52 percent in Darwin, 62 percent in
Palmerston, 40 percent in Tennant Creek, and 27 percent in Alice Springs.

“Palmerston saw an increase of 52 percent in alcohol-related assaults, Tennant Creek
recorded a rise of 43 percent, and more than 1,400 people were the victim of assaults
involving alcohol across Darwin.

“These figures point to a sustained failure of law and order reforms, and alcohol policy by this
incompetent Gunner Labor Government.

A CLP government would:

  • Put the rights of victims above the rights of offenders;
  • Ensure the Chief Minister holds the Police portfolio;
  • Bring back breach of bail as an offence for youths;
  • Launch a Parliamentary Inquiry into police attrition;
  • Ensure our police have adequate resourcing and recruitment programs;
  • Establish a purpose-built ‘Sentenced to a Skill’ boot camp;
  • Move Youth Justice from Territory Families back to Corrections;
  • Scrap the minimum floor price; and
  • Conduct an immediate review of the Banned Drinker Register

“We know there is no silver bullet, but the fact it took years for Chief Minister Michael Gunner
to even acknowledge the problem, and dragged his heels on pushing through watered down
youth justice reforms just highlights how offender focused this Labor government is,” said Mr
Maley.
