Leader of the Opposition, Lia Finocchiaro, says today’s performance by the Chief Minister in Question time shows Michael Gunner is on the ropes and desperately clinging to his sinking ship.

“The only thing the Chief Minister proved was that he could keep to carefully scripted lines as he tried to bat away question after question on the need for an independent investigation into the four days between the fatal Yuendumu shooting and charging of Constable Rolfe.

“Clearly the Chief Minister’s minders have him on strict instructions now that the anti-corruption watchdog is investigating.

“He failed to explain why he has tried to convince Territorians that a coronial inquiry will answer their questions, knowing full well the coronial will be limited to the circumstances of the death – not whether there has been political influence, or why Constable Rolfe was charged with murder, despite concerns from senior investigators around the “haste” in laying the charge.

“He failed to say if he would fully cooperate with the ICAC investigation despite his arrogant comments today that the investigation is “completely unnecessary” – and despite the fact NT Police issued a public statement, just one hour after the ICAC Commissioner confirmed his investigation, to guarantee full cooperation with the inquiry.

“The height of the Chief Minister’s failures came when he tasked the Leader of Government to shut down a censure motion, brought forward by the Opposition – which is the most serious form of condemnation of government that can be brought before the House.

“The cracks are appearing and this government has reverted to what it knows best: deceive, distract, dodge and cover-up.

“Michael Gunner can’t even answer the simple question that every Territorian wants to know: when will you resign?” said Mrs Finocchiaro.
