Leader of the Opposition, Lia Finocchiaro, says the deliberately-timed resignation of Michael Gunner comes as welcome relief to tens of thousands of Territorians who feel completely abandoned and ignored by Labor, but triggers up to a month of Labor infighting and distraction.

“Michael Gunner’s resignation comes after mounting pressure from the Opposition and Territorians, highlighting Labor’s catastrophic failures on crime, economy, cost of living pressures, health, government integrity – and COVID.

“To quit as Chief Minister during a crucial budget speech is unprecedented and shambolic.

“It lacks statesmanship and is totally disrespectful to Territorians.

“Cynics would say the resignation has been timed to distract from a visionless budget and looming federal election.

“The reality is, Michael Gunner should have resigned years ago.

“At a time when the Territory needs strong leadership to deal with the crime crisis and flailing economy – Labor members are too busy focused on themselves.

“The political leadership of the Territory should not be treated like a toy by Labor.

“The only thing on Labor’s mind this week will be their own jobs as Territorians are subjected to the chaos of leadership jostling and ministerial reshuffles.

“The CLP Opposition wishes Michael Gunner and his family well,” said Mrs Finocchiaro.
