Shadow Minister for Health, Bill Yan, says the latest NT crime statistics makes for more grim reading for Territorians and proves Labor’s policy failures are creating more victims of crime.

“Violent crime remains at critically high rates. In the last year across the Territory, 18,614 people were the victim of assault, domestic violence-related assault and alcohol-related assault. These figures are disgraceful and highlight sustained law and order, and alcohol policy failures under NT Labor, which has been in power for the last six years.

“Yet this week, Labor and the new Chief Minister turned her back on police and NT workers who are routinely assaulted – by voting down the CLP’s attempt to toughen penalties for offenders.

“In Tennant Creek, which represents 2 percent of the NT’s population, you’re almost six times more likely to be the victim of a DV-related assault and almost five times more likely to be an alcohol-related assault victim compared with Darwin – which is 35 percent of the population.

“In Alice Springs you’re three times more likely to be a victim of DV, and twice as likely to be assaulted by a drunk, compared with Darwin. Alice Springs represents 12 percent of the Territory’s population.

“Property crime – in the 12 months to the end of March – has skyrocketed.

COMMERCIAL BREAK INS

  • NT-wide UP 59 percent
  • Darwin UP 75 percent
  • Alice Springs UP 71 percent
  • Katherine UP 112 percent

HOUSE BREAK INS

  • NT-wide UP 44 percent
  • Darwin UP 54 percent
  • Alice Springs UP 58 percent

“A CLP government will put the rights of victims above the rights of offenders. We will set a presumption against bail for repeat adult and youth offenders, and reinstate breach of bail conditions as an offence for youths. Youth Justice must be returned to Corrections, the minimum floor price scrapped and an immediate review launched into the Banned Drinker Register,” said Mr Yan.
