Shadow Minister for Small Business, Marie-Clare Boothby, says that Labor’s absence from yesterday’s public forum on crime shows that the Government aren’t listening and just don’t care.

“Yesterday at Tamarind Park in Darwin, private citizens arranged a public forum to address the skyrocketing cases of crime and antisocial behaviour.

“Small business owners, concerned citizens, the police, the media, Darwin City council representatives and the Opposition attended and shared and listened to the atrocious accounts of unacceptable behaviour they are witnessing far too frequently.

“Not one member of the Fyles Labor Government attended.

“To help curb the high levels of alcohol fuelled antisocial behaviour the Opposition is pushing for laws making it an offence to consume liquor in public within 2 km of a licensed premises (the 2km Rule).

“The link between alcohol and antisocial behaviour in the Territory is harming businesses, tourism and has decreased the liveability of our communities.

“More must be done to address the crime crisis and Territorians are crying out for help. Labor aren’t listening. They couldn’t even be bothered turning up to face the community.

“It’s just not good enough,” says Ms Boothby.
