The future of the Beetaloo Basin has never been more uncertain with Labor passing motions to kill the industry.

Shadow Minister for Mining and Industry Steve Edgington today called on Natasha Fyles to explain whether she backs Labor’s position or backs the Beetaloo.

“At a time when the world is crying out for energy security, Labor and the Greens are shutting down an industry that can delivery lower energy prices, cleaner energy and jobs in the Northern Territory,” Mr Edgington said.

“Labor have no commitment to cleaner, reliable energy or developing jobs, and has shown its true position which threatens up to 6000 jobs and the security of the Territory’s future.”

Labor motions at the conference called for the stoppage of exploration in the Beetaloo Basin, an immediate ban on gas development, and the removal of support for the gas industry.

Over $400 million has already been spent on exploration in the Beetaloo Basin, creating jobs for locals and income for local Territory businesses, as well as providing exploration royalties to Native Title holders.

Mr Edgington questioned whether Natasha Fyles or Nicole Manison attended the Territory Labor Conference and supported the motions.

“Were these members of the government at the conference and, if they were, did they vote for or against these motions?” he said.

“Territorians are entitled to know if Labor is united against jobs and industry. And if Labor is divided on this important industry, then Territorians know they can’t Trust Labor either way.”
