Alice Springs reached a new milestone in Labor’s Crime Crisis statistics today with more than 8000 crimes against property recorded for the year to October 30.

Shadow Minister for Youth Joshua Burgoyne said the grim milestone was further proof Labor’s policies were only making things worse.

“Today’s statistics come as no surprise for locals who are living in fear and paying the high price of crime everyday,” he said.

Crimes against property for the year were up 35% on the previous year, with commercial break-ins and property damage both up 56%.

Crimes against the person were up 32% on the previous year, with alcohol-related assault up 48% and domestic violence up 47%.

Mr Burgoyne said locals were increasing concerned about when the crime crisis might ease.

“The Fyles Labor government won’t even accept there is a Crime Crisis and refuse to believe it is having an impact on families and businesses,” he said.

“When Montes announced they would be closing because the Crime Crisis made doing business impossible, Labor was trying to tell ABC listeners the closure had nothing to do with crime.

“On the one hand you have the business owner saying it’s closing down because of crime and on the other hand we’ve got a clueless Labor Minister saying it’s not crime, it’s just ‘a commercial decision’.

“I know which one of the two I believe and it’s not the Party that has no plan and genuinely no idea.”
