Taking away a police officer’s ability to use their weapon would be an offence under the CLP’s amendment to Labor’s proposed “disarmament” law in parliament today.

Leader of the Opposition Lia Finocchiaro said by setting “possession” as the test and having to prove intent, Labor was making even the most extreme cases almost impossible to successfully prosecute.

But despite support from the NT Police Association the Fyles Labor government tonight voted against stronger laws for offenders taking control of a police officer’s weapon.

Mrs Finocchiaro said the Fyles government opted to keep their intentionally weak laws.

“Labor admitted they had purposely drafted a weaker law and then rejected the CLP’s attempt to better protect police,” she said
