While motorsport’s popular Girls on Track program is up and running in every other state, the Northern Territory is yet to be added to the calendar as it waits on a decision from the Fyles government.

Leader of the Opposition Lia Finocchiaro said every other state had received support from their respective governments and the program was being added to the Australian motorsport calendar.

“The Territory now runs the risk of being too late to coincide with the Supercars visit or missing out altogether,” she said.

“It would be great to see the government make a real statement on International Women’s Day by guaranteeing this program will be funded, with or without the Community Benefit Fund grant.”

The highly successful Girls on Track program in Darwin last year missed out on a major grant to cover the $30,000 cost but was later successful with a minor grant of $15,000 and non-profit Motorsports NT covered the shortfall.

The current application is for $30,000 a year for four years and an outcome is expected soon.

Last year, Girls on Track in Darwin featured the Inspire program, which focuses on education and awareness for girls aged eight to 15.

This year it is hoped to feature both Inspire and the Pathway program, which is for girls aged 15 to 22 who are ready to commit and want to step into the industry.

Mrs Finocchiaro said the program brings women-in-motorsport ambassadors to the Territory, which is another boost for the local economy.

“We urge the Labor government to come to the party here so these important programs can be run in conjunction with the Supercars in June,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.

“Coinciding with the holidays and the Supercars will mean many more women in the sport can meet with participants and become mentors, while more girls from around the Territory will be able to take part.

“This isn’t just about driving because there’s lots of other occupations that work in the motorsport industry, such as mechanics, marketing, and evening catering,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.

“For girls who are into motorsport, this is a great introduction to making a career in an industry they love.”
