The Fyles government must come clean on what is happening at the taxpayer-owned Howard Springs facility, according to Deputy Leader of the Opposition Gerard Maley.

Mr Maley said he had received reports of violence, anti-social behaviour, and damage to property at the facility where flood evacuees are currently being accommodated.

“We’ve had confirmation that police have had to set up a presence at the facility and do night patrols,” he said.

“But I’ve also had reports that an on-site domestic violence unit has been set up and parts of the facility will need extensive repair.

“Labor needs to show us they’ve learned from their failure in Alice Springs and can act without needing the Federal Government coming up to tell Natasha Fyles how to do her job.”

Mr Maley said taxpayers deserved to know what their hip pocket was going to be paying for and what implications there are for a potential handover to the defence force in the future.

“Chief Minister Natasha Fyles must hold a press conference today to come clean on exactly what is going on at Howard Springs, how much police resources are being tied up, and what it will mean for taxpayers and the future of the facility,” he said.

“This is another example of Labor’s set-and-forget management of an issue where a band-aid is applied without thought to effectiveness or consequences.

“The Labor government can’t keep trying to operate in secret. They promised they would be open and transparent but, in reality, they are doing the opposite.”
