This morning, the Fyles Government has finally listened to the CLP Opposition and has announced a review into Bail Laws.

In March 2021 we introduced the Bail Legislation Amendment Bill which would create a presumption against bail for repeat offenders and violent offenders, and reverse changes the Labor Government made to the Bail Act when they removed breach of bail as an offence.

Mrs Finocchiaro said, “For years we have been calling to stop the revolving door of bail, sadly it took Declan’s loss of life to a violent offender out on bail for Natasha Fyles to listen.”

“His death was avoidable but it cannot be in vain”

“Our legislation is written and could be implemented this week by the Parliament. It is important Natasha Fyles does not pick and choose parts of bail to be reviewed,” she said.

“Natasha Fyles failed to give a timeline for this review. Territorians don’t need a review – they need immediate action.

“Yesterday, the CLP stood in Parliament and asked to work with Government on bail reform and Natasha Fyles said no. Today she has now had to admit enough is enough.”
