Today, in Question Time, Deputy Leader of The Opposition Gerard Maley asked the Chief Minister about the advice sent to electorate offices last week, following the death of Declan Laverty and the anger felt by Territorians at this avoidable tragedy.

He quoted the advice: “It is recommended that you keep your office doors locked and screen visitors. Know the location of your duress buttons and please do not hesitate to use them if you feel unsafe.”

“Did your Nightcliff office lock its doors and what does it say about the State of the Territory?,” Mr Maley asked.

“This clearly struck a nerve. Natasha Fyles first tried to shut the question down and would not directly answer the simple yes or no question. In an extraordinary statement, she then spoke about her own safety.

“Personal safety is on the minds of all Territorians, even the Chief Minister, who answered: ‘I value my safety’. Sadly, she doesn’t seem to have that same concern for the safety of all Territorians.

“Territorians are sick of words and political performances on the floor of Parliament from Labor.

“They want action to make them feel safer, but, sadly, that’s not what they’re getting from the Fyles Government, which is trying to pull the wool over their eyes with half-baked changes to bail and not answering simple quesitons.

“It’s clear from Natasha Fyles’ response that she continues to think everything is about her. Well, in the words of Territorians, ‘enough is enough’,” Mr Maley said.
