It is with great sadness today that Territorians learn of the passing of Yunupingu.

On behalf of the CLP, I extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and respected him.

Yunupingu was a remarkable leader for his people in north-east Arnhem Land and all Australians, guiding the nation through many important processes, including negotiations for Kakadu National Park, Ranger Uranium Mine, the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and Aboriginal Land Rights.

Yunupingu was a staunch advocate for the agency of his people and for a future where two cultures could live side by side.

In 1978, he was named Australian of the Year, such was his impact on the nation. But it was in the Northern Territory, especially in north-east Arnhem Land, where his shadow loomed largest.

Yunupingu was an extraordinary man making an extraordinary contribution to the future of Australia. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

ENDS.
