Leader of the Opposition – Lia Finocchiaro

The Fyles Labor Government has been caught out again being tricky with the truth.

Yesterday, late in the afternoon at the end of two Parliamentary sitting weeks, the Treasurer quietly tabled the 2022–23 Treasurer’s Annual Financial Report. Deliberately evading scrutiny, again.

The Treasurer stated, “Great news”…“The final outcome for 2022–23 is a net operating balance surplus of $146m.”

Following careful analysis, we can reveal that the Fyles Government’s Treasurer has been tricky with the truth.

The Treasurer’s Annual Financial Report show the Government’s actual position is a deficit of $454 million for 2022-23, taking total net debt to $8 billion.

With this economic result, how does the Northern Territory Treasury Corporation repay its $650 million debt by March 2024, and another $500 million debt due in October 2024 without borrowing more money.

Unsurprisingly, the Chief Minster and Treasurer are now even further away from reaching their $40 billion economy commitment by 2030, after an almost $500 million deficit this year.

While the rest of Australia charges forwards, under Labor the Northern Territory is going backwards.

The Fyles Labor Government continues to prove that they cannot manage our economy, and Territorians are paying the price.

When will this Labor Government stop trashing the Parliament, and wrecking the Territory.

In contrast our CLP economic plan will deliver a safe, strong Territory.
