Leader of the Opposition – Lia Finocchiaro

Under this weak Labor Government, the alleged youth offenders who last night stole cars in the northern suburbs of Darwin and carjacked a driver with a machete, are all back on the streets free to terrorise residents again.

Of the four alleged youth offenders involved in last night’s incident, the youngest was just 11 and was returned home. Three others were released on bail.

Territorians are sick of Labor’s catch and release approach to youth crime. Labor has dismantled the Youth Justice Act, weakened bail laws, and stripped police of powers.

Labor raised the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 12 and have no programs in place to deal with young offenders.

Labor’s promise of a review of the Youth Justice Act six months before the election is hollow, and it won’t even be completed until after the election. Labor are simply out of ideas.

The CLP don’t need a review to know the system is broken.

We prioritise the safety of Territorians above all else.

Territorians are tired of the Labor’s spin and tricky messaging; they want action. We’ve proposed legislation after legislation to improve safety, but Labor keeps voting it down.

Our plan is clear, empower the police, hold young offenders and their parents accountable, strengthen bail laws, and prioritise the safety of our communities. The CLP will lower the age of criminal responsibility and will have mandated consequences for offending.

The CLP’s plan for a Safe, Strong Territory starts with taking back control of our streets rebuilding the Territory’s reputation and getting our economy moving forwards.
